Early Development Instrument (EDI)

About
The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a community snapshot of young children’s development, health, and school readiness in New Mexico. It measures children’s well-being across five key areas that are strong predictors of later success in school and life:
- Physical Health and Well-Being
- Social Competence
- Emotional Maturity
- Language and Cognitive Skills
- Communication Skills and General Knowledge
New Mexico implemented the EDI in 2024 to better understand the needs of our youngest children and to guide policies and practices that support their growth and success.

The storybook shares how well the service system is supporting children and families. Results are reported as the percentage of children who are developmentally vulnerable, at risk, or on track in each domain.
